Sustainability Takes Centre Stage at Landmark LSE Basement Project

Sustainability Takes Centre Stage at Landmark LSE Basement Project

Posted on 28/02/2024

Newton Waterproofing, a leading supplier and designer of waterproofing solutions for large-scale commercial and infrastructure projects, ensured a dry future for the London School of Economics (LSE) on a basement project that managed to recycle more than 100kg of waste waterproofing materials alone, and consequently prevent more than 132kg of CO2 emissions.

The historic school’s Marshall Building at 44 Lincoln’s Inn Fields includes an extensive two-storey, mixed-use basement that will house plant areas, squash courts, changing facilities and a sports hall, covering more than 2,250m2 of floorspace.

Principal contractor Mace Group, a net zero carbon business, needed a guaranteed waterproofing solution that was not only effective, but also sustainable, and turned to Newton thanks to its expertise and industry-leading Recycling Service.

The recycling of 115kg of HDPE waste and prevention of more than 132kg of CO2 emissions was an exceptional result.

Alice Ashpitel, Sustainability Manager at Mace Group, commented: “The unique closed loop recycling service provided by Newton brought real benefits to this project and helped us reduce our construction waste and support our Time to Act campaign to reduce single use plastic waste across construction, all with no impact on site activities.”

Newton’s specialist basement contractor Cast Contracting Ltd (CCL) were appointed to design, supply and install the waterproofing, and used Newton’s CDM waterproofing system, a safe and reliable form of ‘Type C’ waterproofing that comprises of cavity drain membranes, drainage, pumps and control systems.

Meticulous installation of over 2,250m2 of recycled floor membrane and 570m2 of wall membrane was the basis for the Newton CDM system, while a comprehensive drainage system, featuring drainage channels and sump and pump systems, effectively collects and removes any water captured by the membranes.

Despite the significant waterproofing challenge due to the size of the basement, the requirement of dedicated delivery slots, and a tight programme of work, the project was completed on time.

Newton Waterproofing’s Managing Director Warren Muschialli said: “LSE is a prestigious institution, and the basement project was crucial in expanding its facilities. The Newton CDM System is a combination of decades of basement waterproofing experience and the highest quality BBA certified cavity drain membranes and is the most reliable and maintainable waterproofing solution for any below ground space. It ensures a dry and safe environment for future generations of students and faculty.

“We are also committed to innovation and sustainability, developing solutions that protect buildings while minimising environmental impact. This also aligned perfectly with Mace Group’s sustainability goals, and we used innovative recycled materials and minimised waste throughout the project.”
